Overview

The AAQ National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care is designed for post-16 learners who wish to pursue further study or careers in health, social care or related fields such as nursing, social work, mental health, early years or allied health professions. 

The course aims to: 

  • Provide in-depth knowledge of health, wellbeing, human development and care practice 
  • Develop learners’ ability to analyse, evaluate and apply theory in complex, real-world contexts 
  • Prepare students for higher education and professional training pathways 
  • Foster independent learning, critical thinking and academic writing skills 

This qualification is equivalent to one A Level and is designed to complement other academic or vocational subjects. 

Entry requirements

Merit at BTEC Level 2 Health and Social Care if studied. 5 in GCSE Biology or 5-5 in combined science, 5,4 will be considered if the biology component is strong. 5 in English Language, 5 in maths is preferred.

Year 12

Unit 1 Human Lifespan and Development – external exam May

Physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan; factors affecting human growth and development, prevalent health conditions and the roles and responsibilities of individuals working in health and social care which underpin meeting the care and support needs of individuals.

Unit 7 Health Sciences – internal assessment

Task 1 Concepts of microbiology

Task 2 (i) Role of microorganisms in health and disease (ii) Factors that can influence the development of diseases and infections

Task 3 Impact of diseases and their treatment in a global context

Year 13

Unit 2 Human Biology and health – External exam January

Structure, organisation and function of the human body and the primary and secondary effects of common disorders on body systems

Unit 3 Principles of Health and Social Care practice Internal Assessment (Deadline May)

Task 1 Principles of practice in health and social care which underpin meeting the care and support needs of individuals

Task 2 How organisations, legislation and guidance inform practice in health and social care

Task 3 How social determinants affect the health status of individuals and the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion in practice.

Assessment

The qualification combines external examinations with internally marked coursework. Coursework makes up a significant portion of the overall grade, making this course well suited to learners who enjoy project-based work.
