Overview
Students taking further mathematics at King Ecgbert School find it an enjoyable, rewarding, and stimulating experience. It is a challenging qualification that extends and deepens understanding beyond A Level mathematics, often becoming a favourite subject for those who study it.
Further mathematics provides the opportunity to explore more sophisticated mathematical concepts, including new areas of pure mathematics, as well as further applications in mechanics and decision mathematics.
Students also benefit from the additional study time, as it consolidates and reinforces their A Level mathematics knowledge, helping them achieve their best possible grades.
Entry requirements
If you choose to study A Level Further Mathematics, you must choose A Level Mathematics. 8 in GCSE Mathematics (strong 7s will be considered).
Course content
50% of the course has to be Core Pure content with 25% Decision and 25% Mechanics.

Assessment
Further mathematics is examined across four equally weighted papers at the end of two years. Two of these papers cover the compulsory core modules, with one paper each for decision mathematics and mechanics.
Results
In 2024, 69% of mathematics students achieved A*-B grades, 69% achieved A*-A, and 92% achieved A*-E. Over the past three years, the average results are 76% A*-A and 81% A*-B.
