Overview
A Level physical education builds on learning from Key Stage 4 and GCSE, deepening students’ understanding of the factors that influence performance and participation in sport. The course equips students with the knowledge and skills required for higher education and future careers related to sport, health and physical activity.
Students study a range of topics including physiology, psychology and contemporary issues in sport, such as the use of ergogenic aids, advances in technology and the increasing commercialisation of sport.
Entry requirements
A grade 5 or above in GCSE physical education and a grade 5 or above in biology, alongside a strong interest in performance.
For BTEC Level 2 sport students, a merit overall and a merit in the examination unit are required.

Year 12
Students study a broad foundation of physical education, covering:

Sport and society, including the impact of sport on society and society on sport
Exercise physiology

The role of technology in physical activity and sport
Year 13
Students build on prior learning and develop deeper understanding through:

The impact of commercialisation
This structure ensures progression across the course, with increasing depth, evaluation and application of knowledge in Year 13.
Trips, visits and extra-curricular
As a TASS Dual Career Awarded centre, we provide additional support for talented athletes. All students attend a revision conference, with coaching opportunities available throughout the department.
Assessment
Component 1: 2-hour written paper (35%) – Factors affecting participation in physical activity and sport
Component 2: 2-hour written paper (35%) – Factors affecting optimal performance in physical activity and sport
Component 3: Non-exam assessment (30%) – Practical performance in physical activity and sport
