Overview
The course runs over two years and comprises three modules alongside a practical component. The content is designed to be engaging and relevant to real-world experiences, providing a strong foundation for further study.
Entry requirements
Grade 6 of above in GCSE chemistry, 7-7 in combined science or an equivalent of grade 6-6 in the chemistry components of combined science and grade 6 in GCSE maths. Studying A Level Mathematics alongside chemistry is also recommended.
Course content
Year 12 & 13 chemistry covers three main areas alongside a practical endorsement:
Physical chemistry: atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibria, and amount of substance.
Inorganic chemistry: periodicity, Group 2, and Group 7 elements.
Organic chemistry: nomenclature, alkanes, alkenes, halogenoalkanes, alcohols, and analysis.
Practical endorsement: 12 required practicals over two years to develop and demonstrate a range of skills.
Assessment
Assessment for A Level Chemistry (7405) is by three written exams at the end of Year 13, each lasting two hours, incorporating multiple choice, short, and long answer questions. Internal exams are held twice in Year 12 to monitor progress. Physical chemistry and practical skills are assessed across all examination papers.
Results
This is a popular and challenging course, with many students achieving A*–A grades. Students also enjoy success in national competitions such as the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge in Year 12 and the Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad in Year 13.
