Overview
The media play a central role in contemporary society, shaping our perceptions and providing cultural expression, communication, and participation in key aspects of life. They are also economically significant, employing millions globally.
The WJEC EDUQAS specification allows learners to study a wide range of media products and develop skills in analysing how meaning is communicated across different forms.
Entry requirements
Grade 5 in both GCSE English Literature and GCSE English Language, and a grade 5 if Media Studies GCSE has been completed.
Course content
The course explores how media shapes our understanding of the world, combining theory with practical production. Students study a wide range of media products, including television, film, music, magazines, newspapers, radio, and video games, developing skills in analysing media language, representation, industries, audiences, and contexts.
Assessment includes two written exams:
Paper 1: Media products, language, representation, industries and audiences.
Paper 2: Media forms and products in depth, covering television, magazines, and online media.
The non-exam assessment requires students to create a cross-media production, applying theory to a practical project across two media forms, such as a TV sequence and related print materials, a music video campaign, or a magazine with audio-visual content.
