Overview

Core Maths is a one-year course, studied alongside your other subjects and assessed at the end of Year 12.

Equivalent to an AS level, it prepares students for the mathematical demands of further study and employment, providing practical skills beyond UCAS points.

Entry requirements

GCSE Maths grade 4 or above, studying the higher tier syllabus at GCSE is preferred.

Course content

Core Maths is a one-year course taken alongside other subjects and assessed at the end of Year 12.

Designed to maintain and develop real-life mathematical skills, it includes topics such as financial mathematics and supports other A levels including science, geography, business studies, economics, and psychology.

Studying Core Maths enhances career prospects, higher education readiness, and practical problem-solving skills.

Assessment

The qualification is a 1 year course (4 lessons a week), equivalent to an AS level, and will be assessed by examination at the end of the course.

The course is assessed through two calculator-based exams at the end of Year 12.

Results

In 2024, 38% of students achieved A–B, 57% achieved A–C, and 91% achieved A–E. The three-year averages are 35% for A–B and 57% for A–C.
