Overview

The department offers a range of courses that introduce students to business and enterprise, economics, and personal finance. It is well resourced, with a fully equipped computer room, and is staffed by experienced teachers with real-life business experience.

Year 10: Investigating Small Business

In Year 10, students begin with Theme 1: Investigating Small Business, which contributes 50 percent of the overall course marks. This unit explores how businesses start, the motives of business owners, and how businesses are run and controlled. Although taught in Year 10, the examination takes place in May/June of Year 11. The exam lasts 90 minutes and is marked out of 90.

Year 11: Building a Business

In Year 11, students study Theme 2: Building a Business, also worth 50 percent of the final course mark. This unit expands on the concepts learned in Year 10, focusing on larger business organisations. Students are assessed through a variety of question types, including multiple choice, calculations, and short and long answer questions. Teaching is completed by the end of March in Year 11, after which students begin revision for both exams.
