Overview

The drama department aims to ignite passion and creativity in students. Lessons are delivered by subject specialists who foster a love of drama and theatre. The curriculum combines rigorous academic study with practical performance work, ensuring students develop both skills and theoretical understanding.

From Year 7, students are encouraged to create and refine performances to a high standard while learning to analyse and evaluate their own work and that of others. The curriculum also develops students’ cultural capital by providing opportunities to watch live professional theatre and participate in industry-standard workshops. Literacy is embedded through the study of play texts and key theatrical vocabulary.

The drama department ensures inclusivity by designing carefully sequenced lessons and teacher-selected working groups, allowing all students to reach their potential.

Key Principles

  • Introduce students to influential theatre practitioners, including Frantic Assembly, Konstantin Stanislavski, Antonin Artaud, Steven Berkoff, Bertolt Brecht, and PUSH Physical Theatre.

  • Build transferable skills such as collaboration, communication, empathy, problem-solving, confidence, and expressing ideas and opinions.

  • Explore real-life topics, cultural, social, and global issues through schemes of learning.

  • Develop students’ ability to realise characters and narratives creatively on stage.

  • Sequence learning so that skills and theories are revisited and consolidated throughout Key Stage 3.

This curriculum provides a strong foundation in drama, preparing students for success in GCSE, A Level, and beyond.
