Overview

The course explores all aspects of the built environment, covering design, engineering, and construction.

Students will study site identification, stakeholder needs, architecture, planning, structural engineering, landscape architecture, quantity surveying, and project management. They will use professional software (Autodesk REVIT) to develop a building that meets the needs of the people of Sheffield.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in mathematics and grade 5 in either product design, DEC, art, or geography. Level 2 Designing the Built Environment is preferred.

Course content

  • Unit 1: Defining a Sustainable Construction Project – 12 credits (60 GLH)

  • Unit 2: Developing a Sustainable Construction Project – 10 credits (60 GLH)

  • Unit 3: Support Design, Structural and Services Aspects of a Sustainable Construction Project – 8 credits (60 GLH)

  • Unit 4: Deliver Design, Structural and Services Aspects of a Sustainable Construction Project – 10 credits (60 GLH)

  • Unit 5: Lifecycle and Financial Planning for a Sustainable Construction Project – 10 credits (60 GLH)

  • Unit 6: Evaluating and Documenting a Sustainable Construction Project – 10 credits (60 GLH)

Trips, visits and extra-curricular

Students benefit from hands-on learning through site visits to Kelham Island, ARUP, and BDP. They work alongside engineers from ARUP, university lecturers, and students from Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University. Opportunities for work experience with multinational firms across different disciplines are also available.

Assessment

Course assessment is split equally: 50% for a design portfolio, documenting and explaining all design decisions, and 50% for a written exam covering key terms and knowledge.
