We have recently seen unprecedented events in the world of economics. Questions such as: How can economics reduce the impact of climate change? Why are energy prices so high? How can we make housing more affordable for young people? Why are the super-rich getting richer? Will the NHS be privatised? All these questions and more are explored when you study economics.

Using a variety of learning experiences, you will gain a wider appreciation of current affairs, the world around you, and the consequences of the choices we make daily. This understanding is crucial in shaping a successful academic approach to Economics at A Level and beyond.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in English Language or English Literature and Grade 5 in Maths. 5 in GCSE Business or Merit in BTEC exam if studied.

Course content

Unit 1: Individuals, Firms, Markets and Market Failure

This microeconomics unit develops your understanding of the allocation of resources, the market model, and the factors that make markets efficient or cause them to fail. You will build and use more complex microeconomic models and develop a critical approach to methods of enquiry. The unit also covers the labour market, including factors that influence wages and the distribution of income and wealth.

Unit 2: The National and International Economy

This macroeconomics unit explores how levels of economic activity are determined and examines key national economic indicators, policies and problems. You will analyse and evaluate macroeconomic performance at national, regional, and global levels, developing an understanding of how developments in the UK economy relate to global and EU contexts.

Assessment

The course is 100% examined.

Paper 1

This tests your knowledge and understanding of Unit 1. It is a two-hour written examination, including data response questions and extended writing.

Paper 2

This tests your knowledge and understanding of Unit 2. It is a two-hour written examination, including data response questions and extended writing.

Paper 3: Economic Principles and Issues Assessment

This synoptic paper draws on your knowledge and understanding of both units. It is a two-hour written examination combining multiple-choice questions with data response and extended writing.
