History A Level combines early modern and modern history. Students explore the drama of the Tudor dynasty alongside the complex and relevant histories of modern South Africa and America.
Entry requirements
High 5 or above in history, 5 in English language or English literature.
Course content
Component One and Two: Searching for Rights and Freedoms in the 20th Century
- In Search of the American Dream, 1917–1996
- South Africa, 1948–94: From Apartheid State to ‘Rainbow Nation’
Component Three: Rebellion and Disorder under the Tudors 1485–1603
Coursework
- Students choose from four research questions related to the 20th Century.
- Last year, 75% of students achieved A*-B and 95% achieved A*-C.

Opportunities to hear external speakers and work with higher educational providers such as the University of Sheffield.
Assessment
Three written exams: two 2 hours 15 minutes long and one 1 hour and 30 minutes long. One piece of coursework 3,000 – 4,000, marked by teachers and moderated by the exam board.
