Overview
A Level Mathematics is a challenging and engaging course that builds on GCSE knowledge while introducing new concepts, including calculus. You will develop skills to solve problems using logic, mathematical reasoning, and real-life modelling, as well as learn to use calculators and resources effectively.
The course includes:
- Pure mathematics – extending algebra, trigonometry, and introducing calculus; forms the foundation for mechanics and statistics.
- Mechanics – studying forces, motion, and everyday phenomena; essential for engineering, physics, sports science, and robotics.
- Statistics – analysing data, exploring probability, and applying techniques to real-world problems in science, social science, and everyday life.
This course equips students with versatile mathematical skills applicable across many disciplines.
Entry requirements
7 in GCSE Mathematics – high Grade 6 considered on an individual basis
Course content
The course is made up of a combination of core, mechanics, and statistics topics. Around two-thirds of the content focuses on core mathematics, while the remaining one-third covers applied mathematics, including mechanics and statistics.
Trips, visits and extra-curricular
Visits to universities and talks from lectures.
Assessment
All examined across three equally weighted papers at the end of two years.
Results
In 2024, 67% of students achieved A*-B, 56% achieved A*/A, and 100% achieved A*-E.
The three-year averages are 49% for A*-A and 62% for A*-B.
