Overview

Students explore a wide range of photographic media, techniques, and processes, including both traditional and digital approaches.

Areas of study may include portraiture, landscape, still life, documentary, fashion, experimental imagery, multimedia, installation, and moving image. The course is supported by gallery visits, skills workshops, and specialist facilities to develop creativity and technical expertise.

5 in Art & Design or Photography. Individual cases considered on merit.

Course content

Component 1 is an extended, individual project based on a theme of your choice, supported by a written element (1,000–3,000 words). Component 2 is an externally set project with a 15-hour timed element, designed to challenge and develop your creative and photographic skills.

Trips, visits and extra-curricular

Our A Level students benefit from a range of enrichment opportunities, including trips to London to visit the Tate Britain and Tate Modern, a Thames cruise, and visits to exhibitions such as the Victoria and Albert’s Alexander McQueen display or the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Students also take part in landscape photography sessions, work with visiting artists, and engage in school events like KEStival.

Assessment

Students complete two projects: a portfolio based on a theme of their choice and an externally set project with 6–7 starting points provided by AQA. Assessment focuses on how well students develop their ideas towards a final outcome or outcomes.
